THE second edition of the Kernow Cup was played at St Austell on Sunday, June 8 with North Cornwall running out narrow 21-19 winners.

The fixture sees representatives of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League take on their West Cornwall League counterparts in four league-style matches with 40 points up for grabs.

Table one saw West Cornwall’s Kelly Plumb, Karim Ali and Ashley Taylor take on Shirley Luckhurst, Mike Briggs and David Sillifant.

Although Luckhurst won the battle of the ladies in the opener, Ali and Taylor proved too strong for Briggs and Sillifant.

Plumb made it 3-1 when she beat Briggs, but the North kept fighting back, led by Sillifant’s brace.

Briggs ensured an interesting last match in the doubles by seeing off Taylor in a decider, but Ali and Taylor held their nerve despite Briggs and Sillifant having plenty of opportunities for a 6-4 success.

David White, Aiden Rollason and Jamie Staniland played out a 5-5 draw with Iain Oxenham, Tau Manonge and Holly Davis.

North Hill’s Manonge was the best player on the morning, winning all three matches and dropping just two sets in the process, while Oxenham added two.

West Cornwall’s points came via Rollason (2), White, Staniland and the doubles.

Pete Frier’s treble gave the North a 6-4 success on table three.

He defeated Peter Conway, Mike Hollis and Ty Staniland who all beat Helen Johns.

Plymouth-based Russ Keith added a brace for North Cornwall as well as combining with Frier in the doubles, although he was beaten by Staniland.

North Cornwall also ran out 6-4 winners on Table Four with eight going the distance.

Martin Hynes and Ryan Taylor were both victorious twice for North Cornwall as well as taking the doubles. Yaz Azizi added the other point.

John Tuffery replied with two as Logan Hodgson and Scott Harvey won once each.
