Cornwall Bowl quarter-final
Trethorne 2
BUDE and North Cornwall Golf Club hosted the Cornwall Bowl local derby between Launceston and Trethorne on Sunday.
The Launceston team were pleased to see their team member and captain Paul Hicks supporting the team from the sidelines following a recent illness.
Launceston’s team got off to a flying start as Steve Greenaway and Ashley Rowland wrapped their match up against Peter Rogers and Andrew Kaitiff on the 13th hole.
Trethorne captain Ivor Edmunds and his partner Jeff Richardson levelled the score, winning their match against Peter Penhorwood and Noel Gorman.
The next match to finish was another win for Launceston as Dan Sloman put his shot to the 18th green close enough for partner Darren Chapman to have the putt conceded and Keith Mills’ partner Les Jewell just missed the putt to send their game into extra holes.
Chris James and Joe Dickinson lost on the first extra hole to Geoff Saunders and Lee Cashman to level the score at 2-2. This despite Chris having had a hole in one on the tenth hole.
The match came down to the final game between Derek Basford and Ernie Best and Nigel Musselwhite and Ian Murray.
Nigel and Ian were in front for most of the match but the Launceston stalwarts stuck to their game and forced another trip down the first hole for the large number of supporters from both teams who had travelled to the Cornish coast.
Both pairs birdied this hole to move on to the second which again was halved. So to the third hole and a great second shot from Ernie and a solid two putts proved enough to put the Launceston boys into the semi-finals for the second year in a row.
