May's blitz all but secures Werrington's survival

HOLSWORTHY missed the chance to move out of the bottom two on Saturday as Werrington Seconds all but secured survival with an emphatic eight-wicket success at Ladycross.

The Devonians chose to bat and started positively via Guy Beagley (12), but they found themselves 46-3 with Jack Greening (17) and Brendan Harris (13) also gone.

Sam Stacey struck seven boundaries in his 39 alongside Aiden Gerry, before Stacey and skipper Ryan Walter went in the same Darren Webber (2-26) over.

Bilal Darbar made a quick 12 and when Gerry soon followed for a patient 16 with 127 on the board, the Trees were staring down the barrel.

They rallied via Chris Pomeroy (15) and Wayne Pomeroy (25) before both fell to the in-form Dan Jenkin (2-7), but despite being dismissed for 172 they had given themselves a slight chance.

However, that total was soon eroded by the Mays – Rob and Marley – in a blistering stand of 78, 55 of which came from dad Rob. He faced just 28 balls and struck eight fours and two sixes before being trapped lbw by Dan Lucas.

Marley May was then joined by George Rickard and they soon whittled away the target.

May made 36 from 66 balls, eventually edging Beagley behind to Chris Pomeroy behind the stumps, but with the first team at full strength at Camborne, it enabled Rickard some time in the middle as he struck an unbeaten 52 from just 45 balls as the winning runs came in the 25th over. Only Greening (0-43 off 10) and Lucas (1-19 off 4) avoided the barrage.

Werrington have a 35-point cushion over the second bottom Trees ahead of Saturday’s trip to mid-table Tintagel (1pm), while Holsworthy host champions St Blazey looking to reduce the five-point gap to Menheniot-Looe.
