Jenkin's late heroics in vain as Cally cruise to win at Tintagel

DAN Jenkin produced the remarkable figures of 5-5 from just three overs, however the hosts held on to win a low-scoring thriller at Wheal Eliza.

Werrington chose to bat and reached 22-0 but then proceeded to lose three wickets for as many runs with Marley May (13), Rob May (4) and Toby Ward (1) all back in the pavilion.

Tom Lyle batted excellently at one end, but batsmen continued to come and go with teenager Hayden Coad and skipper Tom Rosevear doing most of the damage.

Off-spinner James Carter then came on to take 2-4 from his six overs, but Lyle did target the other bowlers as he ended 47 not out from 53 balls in their 120 all out as the final two wickets added 32.

Carter and Steve Raven plundered 66 in just seven overs in the chase, but both departed quickly to skipper Jason Seldon (2-30 off 6), which was followed by Rob May running out Archie Connolly.

Needing just another 40, Jenkin was brought on in the 16th over and proceeded to cause chaos as he had Tom Mallet caught behind by Lee Houghton before trapping Matt Ellison lbw and bowling Jack Mallet (110-6).

He soon bowled Ben Carter with eight required, but although he picked up a five-fer in just 18 balls, the hosts got the over the line.

Seventh-placed Werrington host second bottom Holsworthy on Saturday (1pm).

TINTAGEL’S bowlers endured a tough afternoon as Callington Seconds cruised to a six-wicket success.

The visitors are the form side in the league at the moment, and were able to restrict the hosts to 250-7 on the small Butts Field ground.

Tintagel openers Matt Jolliffe (25) and Simon Harrison (23) put on 57 before Leo Agacy and the returning Ryan Pooley added a further 63.

Pooley went for 39 to Rich Brown (2-81), but Agacy added 65 from 63 balls as he was joined by wicketkeeper Sam Abbott who helped himself to 46.

Hopes of 270-plus were on, but Callington’s bowlers – led by the brilliant Jim Shorten (1-25) – were able to keep the runs down somewhat. Jack Minehan made 18 not out towards the end.

Cally’s fine batting line-up then raced to victory inside 33 overs.

Minehan struck early with the wicket of Ben Allsop (17), however James Brenton and Dan Davis crashed the bowling to all parts in a rollocking stand of 77.

Davis (41) was caught off Agacy with 124 on the board, and the Knights soon struck again when Pooley bowled Peter Tancock for just two.

The returning Minehan (2-51) bowled Brenton for 85 with 43 required, but Blaze Eigenmann came in at five, and although not fit to bowl, struck nine fours in his unbeaten 64. Young wicketkeeper Blake Tancock made 15 not out.

Tintagel are on their travels to basement club Bude on Saturday (1pm), while Cally tackle their St Austell counterparts at Moores Park.
