A couple from the Launceston area who are quite literally very much on the ball, have recently come up trumps with the success of their accuracy which has won them £32,332 as well as £1,000 worth of holiday vouchers. Margaret and Stanley Jordan couldn’t believe it when they were told by Littlewoods how much they had won.
A comment article by a media student on drink-related problems published in the Launceston College Chronicle (part of last week’s Post) has been hailed as “refreshing”. The article said the “problems of yobs and drunkards were no longer a dream, but a miserable reality”, and called for a campaign for an alcohol-free zone in Launceston.
Two teams from Holsworthy Community College have won the North Devon Area Final of the Rotary sponsored ‘youth speaks’ competition.
The whistle has been blown on Bude-Stratton town councillors who bring the council “into disrepute” after a series of bitter wrangles and personal attacks reminiscent of Launceston’s infamous car park row. The whistle has been blown by the councillors themselves, who agreed that in future, the referee must enforce the rules and, where necessary, show a red card to any member who committed a foul.

Launceston town councillor Mrs Ruth Sleeman turned detective when it was claimed that a small decorated bottle originally owned by Dunheved Archers had disappeared from the town’s museum, Lawrence House. She traced the bottle — a vinaigrette — to a former member of the archery club, town councillors where told on Monday — 12 months after the matter was first raised.
Managing director of Launceston Motor Company, Mr Darrell Denning presents a microwave oven to Mr Henry Wilton, of 16, Higher Cleaverfield, Launceston, the winner in a free draw sponsored by the company.
There was a disappointing attendance at the winter meeting of Launceston Area Association of Parish Councils held in Launceston Town Hall, when North Cornwall District management team discussed policies in connection with parish council.

Members of Bude’s five-man winning team in the Cornwall County Fire Service Technical Quiz were Trever Down (captain), Terry Mills, Dennis Mutton, Andrew Raper and Michael Hicks.
Miss Angela Cowling, 19-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Barrie Cowling, of St Johns Road, Launceston, received the Norris Cup as best first-year OND student in the Hotel and Catering Department of Cornwall Technical College.
Mr Bernard Palmer, of Carey Cottage, St Giles-on-the-Heath, and a companion set off for work with Mr Palmer’s six-year-old prize border collie Judy at heel. Two badgers came out of a hedge and attached the dog, two operations were required to close the wounds with 50-60 stitches.
Jill Hutchings (dressed as a toadstool), Paul Hicks (clown), Steve Colwill and Jo Prout (King Henry VIII and one of his wives) were the winners of the best costumes competition at Launceston Young Farmers’ Club fancy dress dance.
Sam Bradshaw was elected chairman of Launceston Ladies Football Club with Dawn Pethick as captain.

At a Bude-Stratton Urban Council’s meeting Councillor R J Woolacott appealed for improvements to the dilapidated Parish Hall before Ivor Potter summer show started.
Launceston’s County Councillor Mrs Joyce Hart has been appointed as a member of the education committee and also of the count children’s committee.
Mr William Brent who farms at Brentholme, Linkinhorne, was chosen as a Cornwall council member at the annual meeting of the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society.
Mr R B Treleaven, managing director of Treleaven and Son Ltd, Launceston has been elected vice-chairman of the Cornwall branch of the Drapers Chamber of Trade.

A suggestion from the Western National Omnibus Company that bus routes through Launceston should include a stop at or near the Town Hall in Western Road has been agreed by a meeting of Launceston Town Council.
When an attempt was made to sound the siren on Monday for a service call, it was noticed that it was not functioning properly and was found to have become frozen. Members of the Launceston Fire Service under Station Officer W Vagan(?) made the steep accent to the top.
Residents awoke on Monday morning to find snow lying in depths of ten inches or more with even deeper snow in drifts.

February 23, 1946
When Harrowbarrow football team played Lamerton at home, they fielded twelve men — a fact that went unnoticed by everyone, including the referee and their opponents. Even so, Lamerton won 4-0.
St Teath Parish Council are objecting over the matter of school managers. They think it unfair that St Teath should lose a representative to a neighbouring parish from which only four children attend St Teath School.
The Tetcott and South Tetcott point to point races this year will be run on a new course; on land at Roberts Hill, Great Beer and Hobbacott Farms, Marhamchurch.
As a memorial to those who lost their lives in the war, electric lighting is to be installed in Whitstone Parish Church.
Major A F C Kitchen of Windybridge, Launceston, has been awarded the DSO. He fought with the 5th Battalion DCLI throughout the NW Europe campaign and was wounded three times.

February 22, 1936
In six months over £6,000 has been subscribed towards Launceston’s proposed new hospital, estimated to cost £10,000 and as a result of this magnificent response, building is to start in the spring. Mr C H Gillbard has given the site at Badash Cross, which in the words of chairman Rev E C H Fymont, is “a place for the future, there being room to expand if needed”.
The new Co-operative Society premises at Camelford, in course of erection when the old building was destroyed by fire, have been formally opened by Sir Henry Wilkins. He presented the local president, Mr W O Hill, with an inscribed gold watch to mark the occasion.

February 27, 1936
A bullock which ran amok caused considerable excitement in the streets of Launceston on Tuesday. It was eventually shot in the road outside the National School. A similar event occurred at Holsworthy on Friday, but here the animal was secured by ropes.
Mr B L Somner, lay reader in the parish of Tintagel and who had been in charge of the mission church at Treknow, has been presented with a cheque and an illuminated address on leaving the district.
A meeting of farmers held at the Manor Inn, Ashwater, on Thursday, and presided over by Mr T R Stephens, decided that a monthly cattle auction should be held at Ashwater, Messrs Kivell and Sons were appointed the auctioneers.
