435 Lambs, 181 Draft Ewes and Rams

Smaller entry and a steadier trade which was inline with the rest of the country. The well fleshed lambs sold to a top of 316ppk for a pen of 46kgs at £145.50 from Mark Dymond of Higher Hollick, Yarnscombe.

A pen of Suffolk x 44.4kgs from OVG Dennis & Son of Wickington, South Tawton realised 314ppk £139.50. Top per head on the day was £152 again sold by Mark Dymond, Yarnscombe.

Draft Ewes

Again a strong trade for all draft ewes and more could have been sold. Top on the day was £190 for a Texel from Graham Cowling of Kingshill, Bude.

Texel x ewes to £157 from Neil Trewin of Abbotsham and Suffolk x ewes to £156 ftom SJ Murrin & Sons of Monkokehampton. Mules to £151 and grazing ewes at £95 to £120.

258 Store Lambs

A faster trade for all store lambs, top being £125 for Texel x shorn lambs from Nigel Cleave of Launcells. Wool lambs to £123 from Tom Mawtus of Clawton.

26 Rams

A strong trade with Chartex 2T topping the day at £495 from the Bealey family of Torrington and Peter Uglow of Treluddick saw 2 of his Charollais 2T top at £460.

483 Breeding Ewes

Good entry of Breeders met with a total clearance. 2 pens of Suffolk x 2T from Mike Hill of Bideford topped the day at £230 and Mike also realised £215 for a pen of mule 2T.

Henry Banbury of Iddesleigh topped the Suffolk x ewe lambs at £154 for 3 pens and J Davey & Sons of Bratton Clovelly had a run of mule ewe lambs on offer which saw 2 pens achieve £120.

568 Calves and Weaned Calves

A massive number of calves through Holsworthy making it 1026 sold here in a fortnight.

Trade overall would have been strong for the first two thirds of the sale but did tail off towards the end.

Weaned Calves

A smart run of weaned calves which sold to £800 for an eye-catching Limousin steer (6m) for TWB Hookway & Partners, Winkleigh who sold Blue steers to £750 and £725 (5-6m). Heifers from the sale farm reached £630 for a sweet pair of Blues (5m).

Milk Calves

A large offering sold to a top of £800 given for a pair of strong, older Blue bulls in from O Petherick & Son, Kilkhampton.

Other younger types £660 Westcott Farm Partnership, Holsworthy £628 FK, M & SK Kendall, Bodmin, £610 WJ Johns of Buckland Brewer, £580 Weavian Farms, Bideford, £560 S Wallis & Son, Helston, £550 NJ & KC Bowden, Highampton, £535 RK & CL Sainsbury Ltd, North Petherwin.

Hereford bulls in next, selling to £620 JH & SM Dark, Helston others £452 for GC & LA Jones, Crediton, £450 AJ Bunkum, Saltash and £410 Trela Farms, Camelford.

Best Charolais bulls to £610 SR Gilbert & Son, Sheepwash others £495 from the same vendor, more £490 J Sillifant, Pancrasweek and £445 (x2) for LJ Goaman & Sons, Hartland.

Limousin bulls to £605 and £565 both in from TWB Hookway & Partners, others £555 PH Collins Partnership, Holsworthy.

Angus bulls again sold well and reached £550(x2), others £530 for LD Heywood Ltd of Hartland and £495 for SG & MR Ley, Sutcombe.

Heifers sold up to £558 for some super Blues in from Westcott Farm Partnership who sold more well to £535 (x2), £520 (x3), £510 and £502. Other strong Blue heifers to £535 PH Collins also £535 for FK, M & SK Kendall.

Best Limousin heifers £540 PH Collins, £450 TWB Hookway and very young sorts to £360 and £320 from MT Braunton, Helland.

A standout run of Angus heifers reached £375 and £355 (x2) for S Wallis & Son – a credit to them. Other Angus heifers £305 NJ & KC Bowden and £300 Rob Veale of Halwill with plenty of good Angus heifers over £250.

Hereford heifers to £485 O Petherick & Son, £410 Trela Farms, followed by Charolais heifers reaching £430 LJ Goaman, £408 SR Gilbert & Son and £358 J Sillifant.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Yet again Friesian bulls sold very well with 14 forward, averaging £150 per head to a top of £300 for the real mccoy of Friesian bulls in from MJ Hopper, Whitstone who sold another well at £280.

350 Store Cattle

A good number of cattle this week saw a more autumnal trade with several bunches of cattle on offer looking leaner and with more coat than in previous weeks.

Another strong trade for those cattle with cover topping at £2280 for a 25mth Hereford steer (non-FA) from Messrs RA & LM Gerry of North Tamerton.

Other Herefords with condition & style from Messrs D&T Wildren of Torrington topped at £2250 for 3 at 19mths other Herefords from the same farm at £1920, other natives from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe to £1880.

Best of the continentals hit £2050 for 2 British blues to £1910(4) and single suckled steers in demand.

Mr S Norman of Dolton saw his Saler steers at £1920 and Limousin steers from Messrs KJ&M Cole of Yeolmbridge at £1940, other Limousins from Mr A Bowden of Clawton to £1830.

The 15-16mth continental steers which had lost condition saw several bunches at £1300-£1500.

Best of the heifers hit £2050 for a 28mth South Devon from Mr D Heard of Holsworthy other good condition grass cattle from Messrs HF Chubb & Son saw £1930 & £1890.

3 good Charolais from Mr B Stacey of Bradford to £1870 and the best of the Aberdeen angus was a 26mth old to £1860 from RJ Wade of Welcombe others from Mr KJ Waldon & partners of Umberleigh at £1850 & £1790.

Younger Stores

Several weathered bunches of younger stores saw the best to £1300 for 3 12mth Herefords from Messrs MJ & RE Andrews of Lifton whose second bunch at £1180.

A nice run of 12mth cattle from Messrs TJ Boughton & Son of Bradworthy saw Aberdeen angus at £1220, British blues to £1150 and British blue heifers to £1090.

British blue steers from Messrs MW & CJ Hawking of Black Torrington at £1100, Limousins to £1050 and Limousin heifers from the same farm at £1080.

Grazing Cows

£1350 was the top for a 6 year old Aberdeen angus cow from Mr S O Metherell of Welcombe who sold others at £1100.

Finished Cattle

Top was 299ppk for a 716kilo Hereford steer from Mr WM Bridgman of Jacobstow at £2140.

56 Dairy Cattle

The dairy market saw an improved trade with a packed ring of buyers. Top call of the day was £3050 on two occasions.

Firstly for ‘Glendene Bertha 171’ a fresh calved heifer yielding 34Kgs on behalf of Messrs H Burrows & Sons of Woolacombe and secondly for ‘Littleweir Cyprus Boo’ another fresh calved heifer yielding 27Kgs on behalf of Messrs J & SW Murch of Umberleigh.

Other fresh calvers saw a top of £3000 for Messrs Burrows with Mr RM Gillbard of Boyton topping at £2900 and Messrs WF Parsons & Son of Pyworthy topping at £2650 for their consignment of fresh calvers.

Messrs RG Olver & Son of Mevagissey sold a consignment of mid-late lactation cows, including a number not back in calf which topped at £1350.

In calf heifers topped at £2000 for a heifer due late November to Hereford on behalf of Messrs KJ Waldon & Partners of Umberleigh with Mr RM Rundle of St Austell topping at £1850 for his consignment of heifers due January/February.

Steve Beer and Family sold an excellent consignment of bulling/yearling heifers to a top of £1250 (X7) with the consignment averaging £1031.

A smart March 2024 born Hereford bull from the pedigree ‘Dartmoor’ herd sold to £3000.
