POLICE are asking communities to be vigilant against suspicious activity at ATM machines.
ATM fraud includes skimming where criminals install equipment on the machines, wirelessly transmitting the card number and PIN. The equipment, a skimmer and a camera, can be disguised.
Crime prevention officer Dave Cudlip said: "Taking simple steps will help reduce the criminals chances of being successful.
"Being aware of what is going on around you and ensuring there is no-one standing too close is a good habit to get into."
The police are advising people to:
l Check the machine for signs of tampering or unusual additions such as leaflet holders or speaker grills.
l Stand close to the screen and shield the keypad with your hand while entering your PIN.
l Make sure you are not being watched while at the machine.
l Cancel the transaction and recover your card if you suspect a machine is not working properly.
l Avoid removing suspicious devices incase the criminal is nearby and uses force to retrieve it.
l Report to the shop or bank where the ATM is located and inform the police if you notice anything suspicious.
l Keep a record of your debit and credit card details in a safe place so you can cancel them quickly if they are lost or stolen.
l Never keep a written record of your PIN number in your purse or wallet.
