North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2018/19 latest news and results

THERE were just five games that went ahead in the North Cornwall Table Tennis League last week with three of those being Knockout Cup clashes and the other two rearranged league fixtures.

Whitstone Wanderers made the trip to bottom side Crackington B in Division One and came away with a 6-4 victory for their second success of the season.

After Nathan Jukes easily got the better of Keiron Chatterjea to put the visitors in front, Ross Paynter, who was making his first league appearance since November, outlasted Barry Stearman in a long, drawn out affair which went the distance.

Paul Seez was standing in for the absent Robin Evans but couldn’t beat Doug Genini before Paynter beat Jukes to make it 2-2.

Genini and Stearman then both in four ends against Chatterjea and Seez before Chatterjea and Paynter won the doubles 13-11 in the fifth end.

Paynter ensured a perfect night’s work by defeating Genini to make it all square before Jukes and Stearman ensured the victory by winning the last two matches of the night.

Torridge remain on course for a league and cup double after thrashing Helland 5-1 in the Division One Knockout Cup, which is played in a doubles format.

Although Ritchie Bartlett and Mike Fisher won a decider against Steve Cragg and Pete Freeburn to make it 1-1, the away side won the next four games to take victory and set up a final against either Budehaven A or North Hill A who’s match was postponed.

In Division Two, Budehaven C leapfrogged North Hill C into second place after a 7-3 victory over them.

The village side’s night actually started well as victories for David Wilson and Michael Kinger over Anthony Ward meant it was 2-2.

However Andrew Ward and Gary Bickle, who was undefeated all evening, were in superb form, winning five of their six singles between them as well as combining to win the doubles as they eased to victory.

Wilson did beat Andrew Ward for North Hill’s third point with the visitors’ other point coming from Anthony Ward against Trevor Luckurst, who he beat in the fifth end.

In the Division Two Knockout Cup, Budehaven D and Launceston have agreed to play their semi-final tonight (Thursday, February 28) while Altarnun A eased past Bridgerule A 5-0.

Altarnun B reached the Division Three Knockout Cup final where they’ll take on Bridgerule B after winning 4-0 at Budehaven F. Bridgerule didn’t even have to hit a ball in anger to make the final after Budehaven G conceded.

This week sees the final round of scheduled league fixtures across the three divisions, although there are plenty of rescheduled games to fit in over the coming weeks.
