WERRINGTON skipper Nick Lawson admits the Ladycross outfit are ‘looking at a couple of options’ ahead of the next summer’s ECB Cornwall Premier League campaign.
The four-time champions overcame a poor start to comfortably finish in mid-table in 2025 and with the division looking strong again, know they need to keep building.
However, they are in decent shape.
Cornwall’s hard-hitting skipper Paul Smith has made his return to his boyhood club having been up in Birmingham for the last few years, while Sri Lankan run-machine Thulina Dilshan – who comfortably topped the run-scoring charts in the division last summer – has agreed to a third stint in North Cornwall.
As it stands the rest of the side remains, even if Lawson wants a strike bowler and middle-order batsman.
The wicket-keeper said: “It looks as if there are several signings going on already around the county, but we’re in a good spot.
“It’s great that Smithy has returned and will bolster our batting enormously.
“We’re also looking at a couple of other options, but we’re certainly focusing on quality over quantity as they need to be the right fit for us as a team and a club.
“But it’s safe to say we’re targeting another strike bowler as we’re a bit light if Sammy (Sam Hockin) or Barny (Dan Barnard) are away, and also another middle-order batsman would be ideal, but we’re not far away and will see what happens.”
The club also held their annual general meeting at Werrington Park on Monday, November 24.
The majority of last year’s officers remain the same with Lawson continuing as first team captain and Jason Seldon leading the seconds in Division Two East, while Ian Worsnip and Ian Wills will do the thirds and fourths in Division Four and Six East respectively.
On top of that, the club have selected Emma Horrell as the new ladies’ hardball captain, although there are big shoes to fill for somebody as Faye Dymond has stepped down as fundraising and sponsorship secretary after several years in the role.
Lawson continued: “It’s great that all the major roles bar Faye are staying as they are, although she’ll be missed dearly as she’s been a massive help over the last few years speaking with sponsors and doing grants, including raising funds for the clubhouse extension which has now been approved.
“As for the rest of the committee, it is the backbone of the club and part of the reason why we’ve got such a strong club with four Saturday teams, a ladies section and over 100 juniors at the club on a Friday night.
“Also, as well as the clubhouse extension, we’re also having a new three-lane net put in which will benefit everybody."
With the season set to get underway on Saturday, May 2, the first team have already lined up three pre-season friendlies on April 11, 18 and 25 against Devon opposition, while nets are set to get underway in January at Shebbear College before moving on to Launceston College as they head into the spring.
He said: “Before the season we like to play against sides from outside of Cornwall when we can and we have Sidmouth and North Devon away before facing Tavistock at home.
“All three are good sides and good preparation for when the serious stuff starts.”
