THE Clarets moved seven points clear of bottom side Dobwalls as Sam Tattersall’s near-post header got the job done at Kellaway Park.
Simon Minett’s side were looking to bounce back from their late defeat to high-flying Callington, but on a difficult surface, in front of a very small crowd, the game was slow to get going. Alfie Fothergill and Kian Berry worked hard up front for Launceston but clear chances remained at a premium.
Denham Guild was brought down after a dangerous run into the box, but referee Andrew Hobbs turned away what appeared credible Launceston penalty claims.
As the half drew to a close, Fothergill and Guild combined well on the left and, when the cross arrived, it was met by Tattersall’s head. Home keeper Piran Jones was powerless to intervene and the Clarets took a precious lead into the break.
The second half was largely uneventful with Jude Jago and Archie Wall dominant at the back for the young Clarets, in front of keeper Howie Evans.
Guild looked to have doubled the lead midway through the half but was ruled offside. Jago collected a late yellow card for a mistimed challenge but the Clarets were generally untroubled at the back.
In what became increasingly tricky conditions, the referee played a prolonged period of added time before eventually calling a halt, allowing Launceston to enjoy their fourth away win of the SWPL season.
Penzance, who dropped to fourth following their weekend off and Camelford’s win at basement side Dobwalls, visit Pennygillam next Saturday (3pm).
