SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Falmouth Town Reserves 2 Holsworthy 1

HOLSWORTHY fell to a second defeat in three starts on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at Falmouth Town Reserves.

The Magpies made the long trip to Bickland Park buoyed by their success over Millbrook in midweek, and saw just one alteration as Chris Wildern came in for dual-registered winger Oscar Knight.

The first half was a fairly dull affair as although the dangerous Ben Sharpe had a couple of chances he couldn’t get on target, the hosts took the lead in controversial fashion on 35 minutes when a quickly-taken throw-in, which the visitors felt should have gone the other way, saw …. in one-on-one with Ryan Chadwick and he made no mistake.

Shortly after Sharpe forced the home keeper into a good save, but Town led at the break.

Sharpe twice failed test the home keeper, while Holsworthy should have been level when Craig Duff skied over a rebound after his initial chance was saved.

With 15 or so to play the hosts doubled their advantage as …. took advantage of some poor defending as he came in off the right before beating Chadwick.

Inside the final 10 minutes the visitors lost Gavin Carter to the sin-bin for dissent, and were indebted to Chadwick to make three or four saves to keep it at 2-0.

Holsworthy grabbed a consolation injury-time when a hotly-disputed penalty which nobody appealed for was crashed in by Sharpe, but the Magpies had nothing to show for their efforts.

Reflecting on the afternoon, Squire admitted they got what they deserved.

He said: “On the chances we created we probably deserved something out of the game, but our defending and failure to hit the target cost us on the day, so we’ve got to take it on the chin.

“We’ve got a difficult game on Saturday at St Mawgan who we don’t know much about, so we’ll train in the week, put a gameplan together and try to put yesterday’s result right behind us.

“However, there were some positives, I thought all three substitutes - including our new signing from Bude, Aaron Hart, did well when they came on.”
