St Piran League East round-up

WITH the big derby match between Bude Town and Launceston Reserves called off as well as Callington Town Reserves’ date with their St Dennis counterparts falling foul of the weather, the only match to go ahead involving a Post area club saw second-placed Polperro end Morwenstow’s five-game winning streak, beating them by a single goal at Killigarth.

Coming into the fixture, the team usually in green — this week playing in blue — had been in fine form scoring 23 goals and conceding just five themselves.

However, straight from the first whistle Polperro showcased why they’re fighting for top spot in the league, passing the ball confidently throughout the pitch and it wasn’t long before their possession was converted into a goal. A free-kick was headed across the box, allowing Robert Spencer to apply a poachers finish at the back-post, after ten minutes.

The home-team were soon two goals to the good, Spencer again getting on the scoresheet, after his attempted cross from the by-line saw the ball loop over Matt Mansbridge and into the net.

Although on the back-foot and against the run of play, the North Cornwall outfit weren’t going to lie-down. A quick move released in-form striker Gavin Carter, who tucked the ball into the bottom left corner with a finessed finish from the right-hand side of the box.

With parity in sight, a handball resulted in a spot-kick being awarded for the travelling team, Carter again coming to the fore, bringing the game back level.

The second-half was a much more balanced affair with both teams coming close to snatching victory. But it was to be Spencer’s day, as he completed his hat-trick direct from a corner kick, which managed to cross the line before being cleared. However, the goal was rightly awarded by the linesman and secured all three points for Polperro.
