SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

St Day 1 Camelford 4

CAMELFORD took advantage of their clash at St Day being the only game in the division to survive the weather as they won 4-1 at Vogue Park to go fourth.

The pitch was likely going to make playing football difficult and this proved to be a bit of a leveller.

A scrappy opening saw few chances with St Day competing well and Camelford struggling to get in to their stride.

As the game wore on Camelford were looking dangerous through widemen Ryan Downing and Liam Higgins, but needed a corner to take the lead 10 minutes before half-time as a deep delivery caught out almost everyone. But clever anticipation from Mark Gusterson saw the ball drop to him, he took a great touch and curled a beautiful strike that went over the keeper and in off the underside of the bar.

Camelford’s lead was very short lived as Tyler Oliver spotted stand-in keeper Dan Balsdon off his line and hit a great strike from halfway that sailed in.

A stern half-time team talk saw the North Cornwall side come out very quickly, although they were left frustrated by the home keeper’s excellence.

But just after the hour they went back in front as Ross Beare found Higgins who beat the offside trap and made no mistake.

Camelford scored their third soon after with Downing rounding off a good team move.

Gusterson was soon sin-binned, but the bench was utilised by boss Bobby Hopkinson as they saw the game out comfortably, grabbing a fourth towards the end when Jacob Ham fired home a lovely curling finish from the edge of the box.

The Camels visit Bude Town on Saturday (3pm).
