Launceston FC news

LAUNCESTON played twice in Plymouth last week as they stepped up the intensity of their pre-season campaign.

First up last Wednesday night (July 25) saw them head to last year’s runaway South West Peninsula League Premuer Division champions Plymouth Parkway, who have opted to take promotion and will be operating in the Toolstation Western League Premier in 2018/19.

Chances were at a premium in the early exchanges but it was Launceston who struck first in the 25th minute as Jordan Walton rammed home a loose ball after efforts by Tom Savigar and Rhys Walton had been blocked.

The Clarets looked comfortable on the ball although Josh Colwill had to drop smartly to deny ex-Bodmin striker Adam Carter on the half-hour.

A series of rolling substitutions resulted in a disjointed second-half, but it was the Clarets who extended their lead after 72 minutes. The dangerous Rhys Walton capitalised on a mistake by home keeper Neil Osborn before calmly squaring to Lewis Young, who poked the ball home from close-range.

Launceston lost some defensive shape late on, allowing Parkway to grab two sloppy goals in the final 15 minutes. Shane Krac headed home unchallenged from close-range, before Jordan Trott equalised with a long-range free-kick.

However this was an encouraging display by the Clarets, who looked particularly strong in midfield.

Saturday saw a depleted Clarets squad back at Manadon, where they faced an impressive young Plymouth Marjon side on the new 3G surface.

Marjon took an early lead before Lewis Young equalised with a fierce 20-yard drive in the 25th minute.

Just as at Parkway on Wednesday, the Clarets struggled to find any second-half rhythm as regular substitutions were made.

Marjon netted on three further occasions before Sam Davey won, and converted, an 85th minute penalty.
