South West Peninsula League - Premier West (Saturday)

Falmouth Town Reserves 3 Callington Town 2

CALLINGTON’S winning start to the league season came to a halt in their third game on Saturday when they were edged out by a hard-working Falmouth side at Bickland Park.

After Kian Thomas (36 minutes) and Alex Wharton (47) put the home side 2-0 up, Calum Courts gave the visitors hope of clawing back something with his 75th minute strike.

They pushed hard for an equaliser but were punished at the other end when Taylor Packenas restored Falmouth’s two-goal advantage four minutes from time.

Substitute Callum McDonnell’s free kick goal in the 90th minute came too late to rescue a point.

Callington had had the majority of the possession during the first half, with the home side looking to counter. The visitors battled well, forcing a number of corners, but struggled to make any clean connections.

They were hit by a sucker punch in the 36th minute, though, when a miscommunication saw the home forward put through, and he was able to square to Thomas for a simple finish.

Two minutes after the interval, Callington lost possession high up the pitch and a ball caught their defence out of position. There were questions of an offside, but nonetheless, Wharton made no mistake in making it 2-0.

Courts had Callington’s best chance to get back into the game shortly after as he went through on goal but missed the target, while Falmouth continued to look dangerous on the break and struck the woodwork in an attempt to put the game to bed.

Callington did, though, get a lifeline 15 minutes from time when Dan Alford’s ball played in Courts and, this time, he finished convincingly into the far corner.

But Falmouth made it 3-1 from a brilliant free kick, a 30-yard drive from Packenas finding the far side of the net.

McDonnell then produced his own fine strike from a dead ball which saw the net ripple and gave Callington five minutes to force something.
