WERRINGTON skipper Paul Smith has announced that they won’t be bringing in an overseas player for the 2020 season, if it eventually gets underway.
At present, the future of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League campaign, which was set to to start on April 18, is up in the air due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation, with clubs waiting to find out if any of the scheduled competitions will go ahead.
Werrington are set to compete in the T20 Kernow Crash, ECB Cornwall Premier League and Hawkey Cup, and had lined up Australian fast bowler Tom Scoble to come over and help fire them towards yet more silverware.
But with travel restrictions likely to be in place for the next few months, and the ECB suspending all cricket activity for the foreseeable future, Smith and Scoble have taken the decision to postpone his arrival until 2021.
Smith told the Post: “With the prospect of cricket a long way off still, I have almost resigned myself to the fact that we may go a summer without any cricket at all.
“As much as that disappoints me, people’s health and safety in these dark times are far more important.
“With a shortened season at best, we have taken the decision to push back our overseas player until the 2021 season. I received a message from Tom stating that travel was getting increasingly more difficult and with cricket postponed indefinitely at present, he would rather come for a full season and be able to perform to his potential.
“This was a decision that was mutually agreed with Tom and with travel impossible at the moment, was the only sensible outcome. Tom has reiterated how keen he is to come over and join Werrington, so all being well, he’ll join us for next summer’s campaign.”
