WERRINGTON Cricket Club are ready for another summer of making very fond memories at Ladycross.
Having managed to win the ECB Cornwall Premier League at home on the last day of the season by just a point from Penzance, club captain Paul Smith and vice-captain Nick Lawson hope to achieve back-to-back successes as they chase a fifth title in eight years.
The club have recruited a couple of players, but on the whole the 1st X1 squad remains the same as that of last year and they will be looking to utilise the skills of a number of promising youngsters that are progressing through the senior teams nicely.
The second XI once again, will be led by the experienced head of stalwart Mark Hodgson. Securing their best ever finish in County Division One last year, as well as being the highest placed team in the east of the county in that league, will be a hard act to follow. However, with a handy mix of youth and experience, it’s certainly not impossible.
The third and fourth XIs will both be playing cricket in a league lower than last year, in Division Four East and Division Six East. However, this should provide greater opportunities to develop the youngsters within the club. Both sides are under new leadership, with the thirds ably captained by Dan Jenkin, and the fourths by ex-club captain Nigel Dennis. These teams are a massive part of the club and have provided a superb pathway over the years to a number of players now playing first team cricket.
Following on from the great success of the Cornwall v Devon Minor Counties Championship fixture held at Ladycross last season, the club were delighted to have been asked to host another Cornwall match this year. This time there will be a T20 day on Sunday, May 5 where Cornwall will play two fixtures against Wiltshire on the same day, with the first match starting at 11am. With coloured kits, great cricketers and hopefully warm weather, it promises to be a great spectacle.
The Ladies Committee continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes at the club. They provide fantastic fundraising opportunities and without them the club wouldn’t be where it is today. Be sure to keep an eye out for the mid-season luncheon, it’s always an excellent day with great food, the bar will be open and a friendly game of cricket to provide entertainment.
As ever, Friday nights through the summer will see juniors from all around attend coaching sessions from Under 9 right the way through to Under 15 age groups, not to mention the return of the All Stars programme which is proving more popular year on year. The club would like to welcome youngsters of all ages and faces, old and new.
Chairman Richard Jenkin said that the club were looking forward to the coming season and wished good luck to the players, supporters and officers of the club and confirmed they were looking forward to welcoming visiting teams and supporters to Werrington Cricket Club this coming season.
The Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League gets underway next Saturday with the first team welcoming local rivals Callington in a double-header in the newly-created Premier T20 competition, while the seconds get their campaign started at their St Austell counterparts. Both fixtures get underway at 1pm.
The thirds and fourths opening games take place on Saturday, May 4 with Jenkin taking his men to Lanhydrock seconds (1.30pm) and the fourths entertaining Boconnoc seconds at Ladycross (1.30pm).
