Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 2

HOLSWORTHY made it three consecutive home wins to move out of the bottom two with a comfortable six-wicket victory over leaders Luckett at Stanhope Park.

After openers Luke Brenton (17) and Toby May (18) got starts before falling to Guy Beagley (2-33), only Ryan Brown with 66 got going as the villagers reached 174 all out.

Spinners Noah Pigdon (2-29) and Graham Wild (2-20) were superb in their nine-over spells, as was opening bowler Jack Greening (2-19 off 8.2).

Luckett skipper Andrew Hoskin (2-39) took the new ball alongside spinner Mark Southcott (1-29), and although both had good afternoons, Holsworthy eased to victory led by Matt Shepherd’s 54 not out.

Greening added 37 before Sam Stacey (34) and Pigdon (29no) had fun late on.

With St Austell Thirds all but down, just 11 points separate St Minver in ninth and Werrington Seconds in sixth.

Werrington welcomed St Minver and despite dominating much of the afternoon, needed a brilliant 47 not out from Tom Lyle to get them home.

St Minver won the toss and slipped to 51-4 with Jason Seldon (2-22), Ian Searle (1-28) and Sam Smeeth (2-38) starring.

But the visitors responded, led by South African Reece Thompson as he put on 60 with Jonny Centini (26).

Thompson (60) departed at 154-7 but injured skipper Ben Hawken (23no) and Ross Keast (21) gave them a chance as they reached 215-9.

Werrington reached 82-0 in just 10 overs through Ed Walters (33) and Rob May before Walters edged Rob Hawken (2-36) behind to son Ben.

But May, who smacked 12 fours and three sixes in his 77 from just 45 balls, continued on his merry way.

Dan Howgill added 22 in good time, but once both fell in quick succession, the visitors fought back through Centini (2-38) and Dean Jeffery (4-33) to make it 193-8.

However, Lyle was joined by Searle (6no) as they patiently added the rest.

Bude made it five successive defeats in games completed as they were well beaten by Callington Seconds at Moores Park.

The Seasiders were once again missing several players and were sent in on a spicy wicket, losing openers Matt Williams (15) and Wayne Adams (9) to Martin Hunn (2-29).

David Sillifant (18) and Richard Dymond put on a half-century stand with Dymond the aggressor, but once Dymond departed for a superb 52 in Jim Shorten’s first over, the wheels fell off spectacularly as the final six wickets mustered just 15.

Aussie Brett Hunter added 28 but the rest proved no match for Shorten (4-2 off 3.3) and fellow quick Spencer Whatley (3-23).

In reply, Hunter dismissed key man Nick Parker for nought in the first over, but after Rich Brown (21) got the chase started alongside Blake Tancock, Tancock (64no) was joined by dad Peter (40no) for an unbroken stand of 78.

Elsewhere, Lanhydrock Thirds thrashed St Austell by 46 runs having posted 285-8 which included half centuries from Josh Taylor (62no), Ben Attfield (53no) and Christian James (50).

St Blazey are just 11 points behind leaders Luckett after they thrashed Wadebridge Seconds by 140 runs.

Ruhann Brenner made 152 not out in their 262-5, before the South African took 4-20 after opening bowlers Nithin Gowda (2-20) and Angus Harley (3-47) took out the top order.
