Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League preview — Saturday, May 22

WERRINGTON and Callington will look to bounce back from opening day defeats in the ECB Cornwall Premier League tomorrow provided the weather plays ball.

Werrington were well beaten at St Just last weekend, and entertain a Redruth side who themselves badly need a win.

The Reds were thrashed at St Austell on Saturday before being knocked out of the Vinter Cup by St Just on Wednesday night.

They will however be boosted by the inclusion of Sri Lankan all-rounder Ravindu Sembakuttige who made his debut during the week. He bowls off-spin and will bat in the top order.

Werrington will hope their batting line-up stands up to another big test, but will be confident their bowlers can make inroads.

They make just one change with Mark Hodgson replacing the unavailable Dan Barnard.

Werrington v Redruth —

Adam Hodgson, Adam Jenkin, Hugh Tomkinson, Mark Gribble, Ben Smeeth, Mark Hodgson, Nick Lawson (capt, wkt), Tom Lyle, Jordan Duke, Jason Seldon, Ian Worsnip.

Callington, who face Redruth in their rescheduled National Club Championship tie on Sunday after the original game last Sunday was off, name an unchanged side from the one that pushed Penzance close for their trip to Grampound Road.

‘The Road’ pulled off a superb 40-run victory at Truro despite being bowled out for just 112 and have Indian all-rounder Virendra Yadav in their ranks.

The leg-spinner who hails from Mumbai, took five wickets at Boscawen Park.

Callington at Grampound Road —

Aidan Libby, Luke Brenton, Dan Davis, Kian Burns, Rhys Davies (wkt), Ollie Allsop, Joe White (capt), Sam Pengelly, Rob Mutch, Matt Petherbridge, Harry Sawyers.

Elsewhere in the Premier, hotly-tipped Wadebridge welcome eight-time champions St Just, Penzance host St Austell and Truro visit Camborne.

In County Division One, Werrington seconds hope to bounce back from their first defeat to leaders Hayle, when they travel to promotion hopefuls Helston.

Like Hayle, Helston are unbeaten and harbour hopes of a return to the Premier Division, but the North Cornwall side have three wins to their name already, meaning the pressure is off.

Werrington make just one change from last Saturday as Taylor Gerry makes his first appearance of the season due to football, in place of James Adams.

Werrington seconds at Helston —

Dan Howgill, Taylor Gerry, Ben Jenkin, Darren Johns, Ian Searle, Dan Warring, Rob Dymond (capt, wkt), Cameron Wakefield, Freddie Ward, Nick Oldaker, Keith Moore.

Lanhydrock’s season got off to a flyer when they beat Falmouth on the opening day, but since then two defeats, two washouts and Wednesday night’s Hawkey Cup loss at Menheniot-Looe means their momentum has stalled.

Things don’t get easier for Ben Attfield’s side on Saturday as they go to Hayle.

Newquay thrashed St Minver in the Hawkey Cup on Wednesday and will hope to continue their momentum at Redruth seconds, while the other games see St Austell seconds host Paul, St Erme welcome Gorran and Falmouth head to Beacon.

BUDE and Callington seconds are both looking for promotion from Division Two East, and both teams have started well, losing just once each.

Bude visit a Menheniot-Looe side who haven’t played a league game since May 1, while Callington will fancy their chances of beating a St Blazey side yet to win since promotion.

Bude at Menheniot-Looe —

Warren Rumble (capt), Matt Hookway, Charlie Gliddon, Wayne Adams, Thomas Hall, Sam Hockin, Matt Williams, Matt Mansbridge (wkt), Shaun Whitefield, James Findlay, Jack Horwell.

Callington seconds v St Blazey —

Toby May (capt), Danny Carroll, Ryan Brown (wkt), Peter Tancock, Chris Simpson, Nick Parker, Alex Robinson, Liam Hunn, Richard Brown, Jim Shorten, Alex Mortimore.

There’s a local derby at Launceston as the hosts, who’ve had their last two games against Tintagel and Roche cancelled, welcome a Holsworthy side that are enjoying life in their first ever campaign in third-tier cricket.

Launceston are missing Dan Tilley (work) and Glenn Coles (rugby), while Holsworthy name the same side that beat St Blazey last weekend.

Launceston v Holsworthy —

David Sillifant, David Cox, Mark Thomas, James Setterington (wkt), James Dawe, Tommy Davey, Phil Spry, Peter West, Matt Bloomfield (capt), Ryan Christophers, Ethan Green.

Holsworthy at Launceston —

Jack May, Aiden Gerry, Sam Stacey, Ryan Walter (wkt), Matt Shepherd, Jack Greening, Fraser Priest (wkt), Brendon Harris, Rob Mitchell, Dan Smith, Ryan Bridgeman.

Tintagel have a tough task ahead of them when they welcome leaders Wadebridge seconds to Butts Field, but make one change with opening bowler Frank Page replacing James Ellis.

Tintagel v Wadebridge seconds —

Jordan Burnard, Geoff Uglow, Ryan Pooley (capt), Jonathan Labuschagne, Matt Richie, Andy Boxall, Jordan Blanchard, Matt Pethick, Tom Harris (wkt), Frank Page, Simon Fry.

Elsewhere, Roche host Tideford and St Minver welcome Grampound Road seconds.

In Division Three East, Bude seconds face leaders Boconnoc at Crooklets while Callington thirds, just a point off the top, welcome their St Austell counterparts who shocked South Petherwin on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Launceston seconds, fresh off a morale-boosting victory at Roche twos, head down the A30 to Bugle while Werrington thirds make the short trip to South Petherwin after beating Bude seconds. South Petherwin have signed big-hitting all-rounder Andrew Brenton from Callington this week, and he goes straight into the starting line-up.

The other fixtures see Newquay seconds host Ladock and Roche seconds go to St Neot.

Just one game went ahead in Division Four East at the weekend with leaders Lanhydrock seconds being nine-wicket victors at South Petherwin twos.

If the weather plays ball, Lanhydrock host Menheniot-Looe seconds on Saturday while South Petherwin visit promotion-chasing Luckett who haven’t played for three weeks.

Milton Abbot are having a better time of it so far than in the last couple of years, and they welcome to Wadebridge thirds to Baxter Park in a battle of third against fourth.

Elsewhere struggling sides Duloe and Saltash St Stephens meet, as do bottom club Grampound Road thirds and mid-table Buckland Monachorum.

In Division Five East, Werrington fourths were left stunned at Pencarrow on Saturday. They host a St Minver seconds side struggling to get 11 each week, while Tintagel seconds visit Foxhole, who are looking to play their first league game on home soil for eight years.

Liskeard’s season has yet to get properly started. Their opening day clash with Tideford lasted less than 40 balls before being abandoned due to the rain, while their next two were called off. They head to Newquay thirds.

Tideford seconds got their first win at St Minver last weekend, and will fancy their chances against their St Neot counterparts. The other game sees the top two meet as Pencarrow host St Stephen.

All three games in Division Six didn’t start on Saturday, and if there is play, early pacesetters Boconnoc seconds welcome Gunnislake looking to stretch their lead. Elsewhere there are derbies at Stanhope Park as Holsworthy seconds welcome Launceston thirds, and Menheniot-Looe thirds make the short trip to Saltash St Stephens seconds.
