BRITANNIA INN HAWKEY CUP (FIRST-ROUND)
Tintagel 124-8 (20), St Minver 125-3 (15.3).
ST MINVER set up a quarter-final at neighbours Wadebridge after easing past Tintagel by seven wickets on Wednesday night.
A sterling bowling and fielding performance proved crucial as they restricted the Knights to just 124-8, before the Grasshoppers eased to victory thanks to Ben Hawken (46no) and Ryan Pooley (38).
Tintagel, who had won their Division Three East opener at South Petherwin, chose to bat but despite Ryan Pooley (15) and Gyles Reynolds (12) getting off to encouraging starts, they were bowled by South African Reece Thompson and Ross Keast respectively.
Having been 26-0 they were soon 34-4 as Ryan Pooley (3-23) accounted for both Tom Parsons and Jordan Blanchard in quick succession, before Glen Burrell (17) and Jordan Burnard added 28.
Burrell became Pooley’s third wicket when he picked out Antony Ash, and although Vedyvyas Chowdare (16 off 14) and Burnard (32no off 33) got a few away, late wickets fell to Ash who ended with 2-18 from his three overs.
Needing just over a run-a-ball on a quick-scoring ground meant they could take their time but 32 came off the first four as openers Ben Hawken and Antony Ash got moving.
Ash (17) fell lbw to Jordan Blanchard who bowled tidily for 1-15 from his four overs, and although Dean Jeffery was soon bowled by Rocco Reynolds to make it 59-2, Hawken and Pooley combined to put on 59 before the latter was caught off the bowling of Tom Parsons.
But Pooley’s 38 which came off 31 balls, allowed Reece Thompson to add the winning runs.
For Tintagel, securing promotion is the main target this term, while for a new-look St Minver, wins on home soil will be paramount in Division Two East.
The last eight tie at Wadebridge is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 (6.15pm).
