LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, August 25 and Monday, August 27

WERRINGTON will win the ECB Cornwall Premier League title on Saturday if they pick up at least 19 points from their showdown with second-placed Penzance at Ladycross after beating St Austell and third-placed Truro over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The West Cornwall club are currently 12 points behind with two games remaining, meaning Werrington can still afford to lose and pick up nine of the ten available bonus points, knowing that a 20-point success at home to Falmouth next weekend will see them claim their first title since 2015.

Paul Smith’s side couldn’t have faced a tougher test than they had to endure at St Austell on Saturday but eventually came away with a three-wicket victory.

St Austell chose to bat at Wheal Eliza and made 168-7 off their 50 overs with Ian Worsnip (2-20), Adam Hodgson (2-31) and Ben Smeeth (2-43) sharing six wickets.

In reply, the visitors were motoring along at 92-0 thanks to Matthew Robins (51) and Hodgson (29).

However, once Robins was dismissed by home skipper Gary Bone (5-23), Werrington remarkably lost six wickets for just two runs to spin.

When Nick Lawson departed at 108-7 the game looked up, however Tom Lyle (29no) and Tom Dinnis put on an unbroken 64 partnership to win it.

On Monday they entertained defending champions Truro who went into the game just eight points behind.

Despite Sunday’s rain, Truro chose to bat and made 168-8 with Ben Smeeth (3-20) and Tom Dinnis (2-40) in the wickets.

In reply, Werrington were indebted to a fine 62 from Adam Hodgson with the rest of the top five getting double figures. Number eight Tom Lyle (13no) got them over the line with a six.

It was a dismal weekend for Callington, who now face a relegation shootout with Camborne at Moores Park on Saturday.

Heavy defeats to Truro and Grampound Road mean they’re currently level on points with Camborne although they do have a game in-hand.

On Saturday they were rolled over for just 99 at home to Truro with only Toby May (31) and Alex Mortimore (19) making any sort of impression. At Grampound Road, Aidan Libby (1-18) and Cornwall youngster Adam Snowdon (2-42) bowled impressive spells as the home side racked up 252-9 before Callington could only muster 146 all out in 37.4 overs with Peter Tancock’s 38 the best.

In County Division One, Launceston are 17 points above the three relegation places with two games to go after picking up 39 points from a possible 40 over the weekend.

On Saturday, they inflicted one of the lowest scores in the league’s history as opening bowlers Sam Pengelly (6-8) and Robert Mutch dimissed Gorran for just 18; that coming after the home side had made 187 with Gavin Wallis (44) and Michael Diebner (30) in the runs.

It was a similarly easy victory at bottom side St Erme on Monday despite losing Michael Bolt to Kyle Van Rooyen’s first ball of the match.

They knocked up 221 all out with Dan Tilley (55) making a half-century before Ryan Christophers (4-23) and Pengelly (3-29) shared seven wickets to dismiss the hosts for just 109.

It’s derby day at Launceston on Saturday as they welcome mid-table Werrington seconds to Lawhitton.

Werrington ran out easy winners at home to Roche on Saturday with Nick Adams (65) and Danny Warne (5-10) impressing. They totalled 213-8 before bowling the weakened visitors out for just 43.

On Monday they headed down to second-placed Troon and ran into the Goldsworthy brothers.

Lewis hit 108 and Jamie 92 in the home side’s 282-4 before they were dismissed for 131. Scott Taskis made 39 and Darren Webber 25.

No Post area club were in action in Division Two East on Monday but on Saturday there was an astonishing victory for Callington seconds at their Grampound Road counterparts.

After being dismissed for just 82, Jim Shorten took six for 13 and Martin Hunn three for 25 in a 26-run victory.

They are now eight points behind third-bottom Newquay seconds in the race for survival although they face a tough task at second-placed Bude on Saturday.

The North Cornwall club beat St Blazey by three wickets at Crooklets in their chase of 134. Mark Peck ran through the top order on his way to figures of four for 25 before twenties from Matthew Mansbridge (27), Thomas Hall (22), Shaun Whitefield (21no) and Matthew Williams (20) did the job.

Luckett kept the pressure up in third after a six-wicket victory over Boconnoc at the Chapel Field.

Boconnoc could only muster 184-4 in 45 overs before the home side knocked it off with ease with 73 balls to spare. Richard Seeley carried his bat for an unbeaten 47 with Luke Brenton (37) and Ryan Brown (50) providing the fireworks.

St Minver bounced back into form with a nine-wicket thrashing of Newquay seconds.

They dismissed the visitors for just 62 with Charlie Hawken, Dennis Brown and Ross Keast all taking three wickets before Steve Hawke and Warrick Rhode both hit unbeaten 24s.

The big movers in Division Three East over the weekend were Holsworthy who recorded back-to-back victories and moved up to fourth.

On Saturday they eased past Werrington thirds by six wickets at Ladycross in pursuit of 148 with Ryan Walter (47) and Ben Hutchings (3-41 and 32 not out) impressing. For Werrington, Simon Bishop made 38 and Dan Jenkin 22.

On Monday they beat South Petherwin by 82 runs at Stanhope Park despite posting just 151-6. Walter was again in the runs with 43 although it was Jack Greening’s unbeaten 64 which proved decisive.

He then took two wickets for just 12 runs off his ten overs before left-armer Rob Mitchell ran through the middle and lower order to claim the remarkable figures of 6.4 overs, seven for 11.

Petherwin did enjoy a last over victory over struggling Duloe on Saturday as they chased down 211. Cornwall youngster Taylor Gerry made 76 with Adam Warne (28) and Paul Clements (22) providing valuable support after Kevin Horrell (2-34) and Andrew Yelland (2-46) shared four wickets.

Tintagel endured a tough 48 hours as they lost to the league’s two top sides.

Wadebridge seconds eased to a seven-wicket success at Butts Field needing 185 with Ryan Pooley (44), Simon Harrison (42) and Tom Preston-Evans (34) all failing to go on after making starts for the home side.

On Monday they pushed leaders Saltash Town all the way despite making just 145 all out.

Pooley brought in his dad Adrian to play on loan from Delabole and they combined to great effect with Pooley senior making 39 and Pooley junior 62.

Ryan then took four for 39 but Saltash eventually scraped over the line.

Launceston seconds are now holding all the aces in the Division Four East title race after bottom side Milton Abbot stunned Bugle at Baxter Park on Monday.

Launceston themselves needed a dogged performance from chairman Phil Spry to get them over the line after they collapsed spectacularly in pursuit of 118 against a St Erme seconds side which was boosted by the inclusion of at least four loan players.

Earlier, Ethan Green (3-33) and Matthew Bloomfield (3-24) shared six wickets before Darren Jenkin (33) and Martin Vanstone (22) added quick runs in the reply.

On Saturday they also struggled to chase 126 at Menheniot-Looe seconds with Jenkin (45), Steve Keighley (19no) and Mark Forshaw (18) in the runs.

They’re now five points ahead of Bugle who lost by 53 runs at Milton Abbot.

The home side made 155 all out with Mark Jenkins making 39 before Tom Rickard took five for 46.

Milton Abbot did lose at Newquay thirds on Saturday by 23-runs after being set 141 for victory.

Bude seconds’ chance of promotion is still in their hands ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bugle. Gordon Wint’s side are third, nine points behind this weekend’s opponents.

On Saturday they bowled nine-man Delabole out for just 67 with Wint (3-10) and Mike Taylor (3-5) sharing six wickets before Matthew Whitefield’s unbeaten 29 led them home.

In Division Five East, Launceston thirds did the double over Werrington fourths by beating them by 89 runs at Lawhitton on Saturday. Five home batsmen passed 20 in their 193-9 with Brett Grosvenor’s 42 the highest.

Werrington lost wickets from the start although Andrew Smeeth’s determined 42 not out helped them reach 104 with Grosvenor (3-21) and Sam Bunn (3-29) doing most of the damage.

Tintagel seconds could only take seven men to Saltash St Stephens and were bowled out for 99 before the home side knocked it off in no time without losing a wicket.

Saltash St Stephens had an equally comfortable eight-wicket victory at home to Werrington fourths on Monday. Martin Wills made 52 in the visitors’ 121-9 but that was as good as it got.

In Division Six East, South Petherwin seconds are up to second after bowling Pencarrow seconds out for just 66 with Peter Dingle (4-6) and Michael Clements in the wickets. Clements then thrashed 47 as they reached their target in less than six overs for the loss of two wickets.
