LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League

round-up — Saturday, August 4

WERRINGTON remain firmly in the hunt for a first ECB Cornwall Premier League title since 2015 after Mark Gribble’s 96 inspired them to the most unlikely 32-run victory at St Just on Saturday.

Justin Stephens (4-18) and Australian Ross Pawson (2-50) ripped through the visitors to reduce them to 85-8 at Cape Cornwall Road.

However, the in-form Gribble found a willing partner in Cornwall bowler Tom Dinnis as they added 69 for the ninth wicket with Dinnis making 8 off 54 balls.

Once Dinnis was out, Gribble, who faced 130 balls and struck five fours and three sixes, added 20 for the final wicket with Ian Worsnip before he was dismissed to leave the home side needing 175 for victory.

Despite losing key man Neil Curnow for a duck, St Just were going well at 60-2 when Dan Lello was caught behind by Nick Lawson off Jono Baldock (2-27).

His dismissal sparked a remarkable collapse as they fell to 78-6 with Baldock and Ben Smeeth (2-18) doing the damage.

From there on in, wickets fell regularly with Stephens the final man out for 61 as Werrington went into their week off on a high after navigating the toughest of tests.

At the other end of the table, Callington were thrashed by eight wickets at St Austell.

No visiting batsman could pass 20 as they were all out for just 110 with Aidan Libby’s 16 the highest.

St Austell knocked off the total in less than 20 overs with Oliver Allsop and Alex Mortimore the men to strike.

In County Division One, Launceston remain in trouble after losing by three wickets to Lanhydrock at Lawhitton.

The home innings was dominated by Sam Pengelly’s unbeaten 82 off 90 balls with Dan Tilley (57) and Gavin Wallis (42) providing support in a total of 235-5.

The visitors lost three early wickets including two to Matthew Bloomfield (2-51), however, Australian Jason King (63) and Ben Attfield (72) revived the innings before more wickets fell with Pengelly (3-54) to the fore.

But Jonathan Harris (22no) and Fergus Baker (12no) then put on an unbroken eighth-wicket stand to get the Bodmin-based club over the line.

Werrington seconds played twice over the weekend at Ladycross.

On Saturday they pushed second-placed Beacon close before the visitors fell over the line to win by four wickets in pursuit of 194 while on Sunday they thrashed strugglers Newquay by six wickets.

Darren Webber, Mark Taskis and Mark Hodgson each claimed three wickets in Newquay’s 151 all out before they were guided home by Ben Jenkin’s unbeaten 60.

Bude and Luckett again kept the pressure on Division Two East leaders St Austell seconds by recording comfortable victories.

Fifties from Andrew Hoskin (57no) and Marc Brown (52) alongside contributions from Jack Sleep (49) and Ryan Brown (33) helped them rack up 262-6 in their 45 overs at home to Menheniot-Looe before Jonathan Hoskin (5-26) and Cornwall Over 50s bowler Mark Southcott (4-30) shared nine wickets to record a 127-run success.

Bude are a point behind after cruising to an eight-wicket win at Tideford.

The home side scored 202-9 with the Williams brothers — Matthew (3-43) and Paul (2-43) — sharing five wickets.

In reply, Warren Rumble carried his bat for an unbeaten 60 with Thomas Hall (39) and Andrew DeRosa (63no) providing the fireworks.

St Minver and Callington seconds fell to disappointing defeats on their home grounds.

St Minver lost by one-wicket to St Blazey after posting just 118 with Steve Hawke’s 38 the only highlight.

The visitors just scraped home despite the best efforts of youngsters Will Durrant (3-22), Harry Hambly (2-22) and Charlie Hawken (2-19).

Callington became the first team to lose to Boconnoc all season after falling to a 161-run defeat at Moores Park.

Steve Marchant made 116 and Michael Blake 69 in the visitors’ 279-5 with only Cornwall youngster Adam Snowdon impressing with 3-49. Liam Hunn made 22 in Callington’s 118 all out.

South Petherwin’s promotion hopes in Division Three East took a big dent ahead of Saturday’s pivotal clash at Wadebridge seconds as they lost by 21 runs at home to Tintagel.

The Butts Field outfit staged an excellent recovery to post 178 after being 121-8 with Matthew Pethick (45) and number ten James Ellis (24) impressing after the returning Kevin Horrell took three early wickets.

In reply, Pethick (2-29) and Australian Hamish Robertson (3-49) reduced Petherwin to 35-4 before they slipped to 127-9.

However, Cornwall Over 50s captain Paul Clements joined forces with last man Andrew Yelland (5no) to make Tintagel sweat, before eventually falling for 59.

Werrington thirds continue to pull away from danger after easing past Duloe by six wickets at Ladycross.

The father and son duo of Nick (5-39) and Freddie Ward (3-19) claimed eight dismissals between them as Duloe were all out for just 147.

All of the home batsmen then got in with Scott Taskis’ 36 the highest.

Holsworthy had no trouble seeing off ten-man St Neot by 93 runs at Wenmouth.

Ryan Walter (59) and Sam Stacey both made half-centuries before Ben Hutchings added 38 in their 239-9.

Hutchings’ good all-round game continued with the ball as he took 3-36 to go alongside Travis Leveson’s 3-41.

In Division Four East, Launceston seconds are right in the promotion shake-up after beating leaders Bude seconds by 27 runs at Crooklets.

Launceston made a below-par 173-7 with only Darren Jenkin (47) and David Sillifant (39) passing 20 although they were indebted to teenagers Tom Davey (17no) and Ethan Green (13no) for adding some late impetus.

Thirteen-year-old Shane Davey (2-52) dismissed dangerman Gordon Wint in the first over of the chase but Bude kept wickets in-hand.

But once veteran wicket-keeper Anthony Greaves departed for a patient 23, wickets fell at key times as they ended up on 146-9.

Stand-in skipper David Cox took 4-31 with Green (3-30) also impressing.

Luckett seconds are down to third after losing a high-scoring encounter at their Menheniot-Looe counterparts.

The hosts racked up 240-3 with Luckett closing on 209-6 with Steven Gold (64), Martin Budge (46) and Adam Piper (32) in the runs.

Glen Burrell’s 92 proved in vain as Delabole lost a thriller by nine runs at home to Grampound Road thirds in pursuit of 225.

He received support from Adrian Pooley (29), Drew Burnard (28) and Sean Phillips (23) but a failure for one of them to convert it into a sizeable score proved costly.

Bottom club Milton Abbot lost by six-wickets at Lanhydrock seconds. The visitors could only manage 141-8 with Ian Tarbotton (32) and Paul Crocker (24no) providing the rescue act.

Peter Williams and Simon Glossop claimed two wickets apiece as the hosts eased to victory.

In Division Five East, Lewis Matthews made it three centuries in just five innings as he smashed an unbeaten 150 in Launceston thirds’ 12-run victory over St Stephen while Gunnislake picked up just their third victory of the season with a 86-run victory over Werrington fourths thanks in no small part to Adam Emmerson’s 106 and 4-27 from Paul Lees.

In Division Six East, Callington conceded their trip to Boconnoc seconds and South Petherwin kept up their promotion charge with a ten-wicket victory at Roche thirds.
