North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 — weekly round-up
NORTH Hill A remain eight points behind leaders Torridge with a game in-hand after both sides recorded whitewash victories last Thursday night.
While North Hill were easing to a 10-0 success over Whitstone, which saw the trio of Martin Hynes, Shirley Luckhurst and Michael Briggs drop just two ends between them, Torridge were tested by Budehaven C who were unfortunate not to take a couple of points.
Peter Freeburn had to call on his vast experience to outlast Tim Orchard and Sam Jennings in deciders, but Steve Cragg was barely troubled, winning all three matches comfortably.
Helland are now just two points clear of Budehaven A in the race for third after being held to a 5-5 draw by fifth-placed Budehaven B at Helland Village Hill.
Ritchie Bartlett was in superb form for the hosts with three victories in the singles. He also won a close doubles contest with Ingus Abolnieks against David Ewen and David Sillifant. Abolnieks beat Ewen in the night’s opener.
Budehaven responded with doubles by Ashley Taylor and Sillifant, while Ewen eased past Mike Fisher.
Budehaven A were 10-0 winners at Crackington A, who were without their best player, Frank Barnes.
Although the hosts won a handful of sets, Mark Beaumont, Dave Salisbury and Owen Salisbury were unbeaten all evening.
Crackington B require a maximum of 15 points from their final matches to secure an instant return to Division One after an 8-2 victory over second-placed North Hill B at Crackington Institute.
Zach Parker was the player of the match in winning all three while team-mates Judith Cook and Keiron Chatterjea also weighed in with two victories apiece. They also combined to take the doubles point. Adrian Davis beat Cook and Chatterjea.
Budehaven E were held to a 5-5 draw by Crackington C who were boosted by a rare appearance from Robin Evans, who was unbeaten all night.
Trevor Dean beat Ian Edwards as well as taking the doubles with Evans.
For the hosts, Edwards beat James Ellis with Roy Stubbs and Ian Westaway both at the double.
Altarnun A and Bridgerule A played out a 5-5 draw.
Paul Burden grabbed three wins for Altarnun with their other points coming from Alex Whitfield and in the doubles.
Alan Quilter and Jay Brewer both recorded braces with Shaun Collins beating Simon Holmes.
Launceston recorded a second win of the season with an 8-2 success at North Hill C.
David Hughes and Stephen Parsons won all their singles as well as the doubles together, while debutant Rudiger Gerlach beat Jill Diggory. John Parker and David Aplin got the home points.
In Division Three, Altarnun B remain title favourites
They are six points behind leaders Budehaven F with two games in-hand. They won 4-1 at Bridgerule B on Friday night with Dave Jones undefeated.
At the same time, Budehaven H won their first match, defeating Bridgerule C 3-2. Alex Worth was at the double for Budehaven.
Budehaven F gained a point on Altarnun with a 5-0 success over third-placed Budehaven G.
