OVER 100 bowlers from all parts on Devon and Cornwall took part in the Bere Alston Bowls Club Mixed Fours Tournament on Sunday, August 6.

The occasion marked the 20th anniversary of this most prestigious competition, which competitors described as ‘one of the best’.

The tournament began under the chairmanship of Keith Whitting and club captain Mo Rockett in 1997 and has grown to the impressive event of today with 28 teams taking part.

Cliff Dyer congratulated the participants and hoped they would continue to support, and enjoy, this annual competition.

Running from 9.30am until 8pm, the competitors required much sustenance, which was provided by a willing band of club volunteers manning food and drink outlets throughout the day.

Play was of a high standard with the team of Lorraine Hawkes, Shiela Robertson, Larry Ireland and Roland Luther from Ivybridge earning £100 for being champions while Dunheved’s quartet (pictured) of Julie Fishleigh, Colin Fishleigh, Margaret Sargent and Keith Sargent finished as the runners-up.
