Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report — November 1
Frostbite 5
A BEAUTIFUL warm sunny day tempted 14 boats onto the water but left them with very little wind to sail with.
What breeze there was came from varying points around the south east, making for a running start in which a whole bunch of boats arrived at the windward buoy at once. Several penalties resulted.
Vicky Duncalf however contrived a brilliant start in her Topper but was soon overtaken by Jane Anderson’s Laser — as ever Jane appearing to conjure wind out of any doldrum. She finished with a nine minute lead over the next boat — Adam Hilton’s Solo.
But this shortened one lap race took her 54 minutes to complete; the slowest winning lap known to the collective memory of the Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club.
Nathan Pollard and Jane Chadney in the RS200 were third over the line and James Pollard’s Laser fourth. John Duncalf preceded his wife over the line by one second.
1. J Anderson (Laser); 2. A Hilton (Solo); 3. N Buckett, V Herbert-Coulson (Bosun); 4. J Dabbs (Gull); 5. J Pollard (Laser); 6. J Buckett (Otter); 7. N Pollard, J Chadney (RS200); 8. R Pomeroy, C Gilbert (Bosun); 9. E Pomeroy (Topper); 10. P Whybrow (Solo) (Laser R); 11. R Spiller (Streaker); 12. S Murray, R Sampson (RS200) ; 13. L Spiller (Laser R); 14. V Duncalf (Topper)
Retired: E Pomeroy, A Gear (Bosun); D Currie (Pico)
Icicle 5
AFTER lunch the wind, although still light, was a little more reliable and the start was changed to a more conventional beat up to Dam Green.
Jane Anderson again emerged in the lead and stayed there but only crossed the finish line four minutes in front of the Pollard/Chadney RS200. It was a race of few changes of place.
Robin Spiller did two laps in fifth but then got past Rachael Pomeroy and Cilla Gilbert’s leading Bosun. Linda Spiller spent the race at sixth, the Nicky Buckett Bosun at seventh, John Buckett’ Otter at eighth and John Dabbs’ Gull at ninth, once John D had got past the Elliot Pomeroy, Amy Gear Bosun, which seemed to get stuck every lap trying to get in to Inlet Red. Vicky Duncalf’s Topper, for which there still wasn’t really enough wind to go racing, was a minute ahead of Eliot at the end.
1. J Anderson (Laser); 2. A Hilton (Solo); 3. J Dabbs (Gull); 4. R Pomeroy, C Gilbert (Bosun); 5. J Buckett (Otter); 6. N Pollard, J Chadney (RS200); 7. N Buckett, V Herbert-Coulson (Bosun); 8. R Spiller (Streaker); 9. V Duncalf (Topper); 10. L Spiller (Laser R); 11. E Pomeroy, A Gear (RS200)
Thanks were extended to the safety boat crew, Toby Tobias and Brian Pollard, who risked having to tow the entire fleet back from Far; and to volunteer OODs Alan Comber and James Pollard.
