ANOTHER year has gone by and, as usual, the Launceston Agricultural Show was a great success for the WI, with craft, cookery and flowers; the WI members proving that their ladies are very creative with their entries.

The committee for the WI marquee had decided on a single subject this year with ‘In the Garden’. On the day of the Show, Thursday, July 28, there were seven very different gardens on show, all of which were very well put together.

It seemed the standard had risen even higher in 2016, with approximately 269 entries, making it difficult for the judges to consider which WI to give best display to. However, Altarnun and South Hill institutes shared first prize with 109 and a half points each.

During this year’s show, there was a public voting system, allowing passing members of the public to decide which entry was their favourite.

Altarnun WI secretary, Chris Evans, said: “We like to see the difference between what the judges think and what the public think.”

Every institute that enters enjoys taking part in the Show, and all of their hard work is very clear once looking around at all of the corporate entries.

The committee will meet in September to discuss plans for the 2017 Show, and will make a decision on the corporate stands, as well as what or not to include in the entry.

Each corporate stand must include two cookery items, two craft items and one flower arrangement, and the individual WI are able to include anything else they wish to enhance their chosen subject.
