BELOW is a copy of a letter sent to Launceston Town Council.
I am a proud resident of Launceston but sadly have to say that the stature of the town is falling apart, with vacant business premises and very little to attract and encourage new people and businesses.
This has been a process of gradual decline which I do not accept has been created by the current financial crisis. In this respect, the concrete monstrosity close to the multi storey car park which I understand is the new coach park has a drab, scruffy appearance of having been constructed over ten years ago and not during 2008. What a terrible first impression and welcome for visitors to Launceston.
The recent improvements to the square are commendable but the town is not realising its true potential. Whilst the markets should be a good initiative, the stalls do not encourage people into the town. These market stalls should be driven with availability of local fresh produce, goods and wares. In this regard the weekly Friday church markets are always bustling with brisk trading and its format should be a blue print for the town square market stalls. Surely, the local Town Council should be creating such commercial initiatives.
An issue of specific concern that I have relates to a Launceston Town Council meeting on February 17, 2009 when I understand a proposal for refurbishment of the Town Hall was approved. Such work clearly will be a major project with significant financial costs and I ask what public consultation has taken place or will take place concerning this matter and what financial provision has the council already approved for this major refurbishment? Where will this money come from? Is it to be local taxpayers' money or will it emanate in the form of a government grant?
In my view I am certain that there are local community projects and initiatives, particularly concerning our youth and younger residents of Launceston that require funding far more urgently. These would be of far more value and importance from which all residents and the town of Launceston would benefit.
As a Launceston resident and Council Tax payer I would appreciate a response to my concerns as outlined above.
Launceston.
