PUPILS from Holsworthy Community College and Shebbear College were welcomed to Westminster by Member of Parliament for Torridge and West Devon Geoffrey Cox on Friday, November 10.
Whilst there the pupils helped to present the first stage of the MP’s Parliamentary Petition on rural roads to 10 Downing Street.
Joined by Torridge District Councillor and representative of Bradford Dangerous Roads Action Group, Cllr Philip Hackett, the group (pictured) presented the first stage of the petition, which is aiming to secure government investment to improve the condition of roads across Torridge and West Devon.
Mr Cox said: “It was a privilege to welcome this group of local students here to Westminster today to show them how a parliamentary petition is presented, and to talk to them in greater detail about the political processes behind such a document.
“I continue to urge as many people as possible to sign this petition as we simply must get the necessary support behind it in order to make it a viable proposition in Parliament.
“I stressed this to the children visiting today in the hope that they will encourage their families and local communities to get involved. If we want to make a real difference to the condition of the roads in our local area then we must get as much support behind this as possible.”
The visiting schools also had the opportunity to look around Westminster as part of their trip.
There have been more than 3,000 signatures for the petition and the hope is there will be a lot more in the coming weeks.
Mr Cox wants to encourage his constituents, with the help of the pupils, to sign the petition if they have not already done so.
