VOLUNTEER surf life savers on club patrol saved two people in big surf on Sunday afternoon at Crooklets Beach in Bude.
Sam Roberts, with Billy Roberts (17) and Lewis Wolfenden Brown (15) were on regular voluntary beach patrol as part of Bude Surf Life Saving Club assisting the beach lifeguards on duty.
After a few days of no surf, holidaymakers were making the most of the 4ft swell that was pushing up Crooklets Beach.
Sam, an experienced IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) driver of some 30 years was patrolling behind the break with the two junior volunteers.
He says: "About 12.30, a strong rip formed on the far North of Crooklets taking people behind Wrangles. We heard the lifeguards make a public announcement for boogie boarders to stay with their boards which alerted us into action."
