This dramatic video shows the moment a brave Coastguard airman saved the life of a Boxing Day swimmer who got after cut off by the tide at the base of a cliff.

The unnamed woman found herself trapped on an outcrop after going for a dip off Trebarwith Strand in Tintagel.

She dialled 999 and rescue teams were scrambled at around 4.40pm, using a helicopter to lift her to safety.

She was checked over and was able to make her own way home, the coastguard said in a statement.

HM Coastguard is now calling on swimmers to take care in checking the weather and time before they head out to sea.

Spokesman Paddy Corcoran said: "The swimmer, who was visiting the area, did exactly the right thing by calling for help and not getting herself into more difficulty.

"If you’re going to the coast, no matter what you’re doing, please always check the weather and tide times before you head out.

"When you arrive make sure you know where, when and how you can leave the area safely.

"Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back, and always take an appropriate means of communication to call for help if the worst should happen.

"We really do have such a beautiful coastline, but it can be dangerous, we want everyone to enjoy it, but please be aware of what could happen and prepare accordingly.

"Remember, in an emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
