On behalf of Launceston Chamber of Commerce may I bring your reader's attention to a recent planning application put forward by Barclays Bank in
Launceston to install illuminated signage to their branch in Broad Street.
Original plans included an illuminated projecting sign on the corner of the building underneath the clock. These plans were subsequently withdrawn but a new application has been submitted that includes a request to install illuminated lettering on two sides of this wonderful old building.
Our members believe that this would be totally out of keeping with character of the town centre, which retains many of its original buildings and architecture and has recently been refurbished using Town Heritage Initiative funding to retain this character and individuality.
Worse, this would set a precedent for other major chains situated around the town square to make similar applications, and if Barclay's application is granted there would be no reason to refuse others.
I am sure Boots, Somerfield, Day Lewis etc would also wish to install brightly lit signage, and if this were to happen it would be disastrous for the character of the square.
The Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of over 90 business owner members is submitting a formal objection to this application, and we would encourage anyone else who values the character of our town centre to do the same — before it looks just like any other High Street in the country.
Chairman,
Launceston Chamber of Commerce,
Launceston.
