THE recently formed Launceston District Support Group of Diabetes UK is welcoming people along to their monthly support meetings, in an effort to provide information and assistance to anybody involved with the condition.

The recently founded group is the only one to provide a dedicated diabetes assistance in Launceston, where there are estimated to be around people 800 who have been diagnosed.

The monthly get-togethers are for diabetics and those closely involved with sufferers —for example carers or family members — of all ages.

Support group chairman, Neil Smith, said: "We want to raise awareness and provide a service for people who haven't had a diabetes support group in the town before."

Over one million people in the UK are unaware they have Type 2 diabetes, whilst many sufferers don't realise the risks and side-effects they face without proper care. These include damage to the eyes, kidneys and feet, amongst others.

Experts in the field will provide information at the monthly sessions, and people who attend will have a chance to exchange their own views and experiences with others in a sociable and welcoming environment.

Meetings will take place on the last Tuesday of each month, alternating between Launceston Medical Centre and the doctor's surgery in the town. There will also be opportunities for participants to join in walks and other social activities such as coffee mornings.

The group will be providing a stall at the Launceston Butter Market on Saturday (July 17) to promote themselves to the community and welcome donations to the cause.

Future event dates will be available via http://www.launceston-2020.co.uk">www.launceston-2020.co.uk and plans to set up a dedicated website are underway.
