LAUNCESTON Rotary Club held its annual Victorian Market in the town Square on Saturday.

Members of the club, along with a number of helpers and supporters, donned traditional costume.

The event was well supported with around 12 stalls from various local charities and organisations taking part.

A competition for the best dressed man and lady was held, with the mayor of Launceston, Cllr Margaret Young, carrying out the difficult job of judging.

The winners were three youngsters, Harry, Angel and Autumn.

Rotarian Dennis Howson said: “It was great to see that some youngsters won the dressing up competition, as it is usually won by the older groups.”

Mr Howson said that unfortunately, due to poor weather conditions and a lack of advertising, the event wasn’t its best this year, adding: “It was ok, it wasn’t wonderful but it wasn’t a disaster. There were only a dozen stalls, which was disappointing.

“The weather was just about palatable, it was a bit miserable, not raining but the air was damp, which I think possibly put a few people off.”

Mr Howson said: “We had the traditional people dressed in Victorian clothing, which was quite good, and there were a lot of teddy bears on sale on the various stalls — and people are always happy to spend their money on a teddy!”

Looking to the future Mr Howson was positive that next year’s event would be better. He said: “We have already taken several bookings for next year. I hope it goes well as it is a really interesting event and quite a few charities benefit from it!”
