THE oldest steam locomotive of its type still in regular use celebrated its 130th birthday on Wednesday, August 21.
'Lilian', from Launceston Steam Railway, was first delivered to Penrhyn Quarry, in Wales, 130 years ago, where she spent her working life.
She was named Lilian after one of the daughters of the quarry's owner, Lord George Sholto Gordon Douglas-Pennant, who named many of the numerous engines in the quarry after various members of his family.
The quarry was the largest slate quarry in the world, and had an extensive rail system to move the slate around the quarry, works, and then to the harbor for shipment.
