TREGADILLETT and Lewannick Primary Schools joined forces last month to take part in an ‘Aquathlon’ at the Phoenix Leisure Centre in Launceston.
Over 25 pupils from Years 3 to 6 took part in a 1km race around Coronation Park before getting into the water to take part in a 50-metre swim where they chose themselves which stroke they wanted to use.
The times were then added up before pupils were presented with medals and trophies inside the squash court.
Tregadillett’s acting deputy headteacher, Jack Horwell, was delighted with the afternoon and hopes to get more schools involved.
Mr Horwell said: “The children had a brilliant day. All of the children really pushed themselves and should be very proud of their efforts, while it was great to see them cheering each other on all the way through.
“I’d like to thank Belinda Peres for organising the event, Helen Ward from Lewannick School for bringing their pupils along, the Phoenix Leisure Centre for hosting it, the marshals who stood out in the cold and to Launceston Sports Therapy for the medals and trophies.
“We look forward to doing it again in the summer term and we urge any other schools who want to get involved to contact us.”
Mrs Ward, who’s the chair of governors at Lewannick School, echoed Mr Horwell’s comments, saying: “It was an excellent opportunity for our pupils to collaborate in a sporting event with other local pupils.
“The pupils found it exciting and enjoyed the overall experience and we can’t wait to do it again later in the year. Thanks to all those who made it such a great success.”
There were some outstanding performances both outside and in the water. None more so than Oceana Peres who won three categories while fellow Tregadillett pupils Joe and Harry Stewart were the overall winners of their respective male sections.
