BUDE residents, Professor Meryll Dean and her husband David Goodwin, were guests at the Queen’s garden party held at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, June 5.

Meryll was brought up in Bude and attended Bude Grammar School before going on to university and qualifying as a lawyer. Before retiring with his wife to Bude, David had a career in finance and was a magistrate in Oxford for many years.

Meryll and David were invited to the palace as representatives of the Royal Over-Seas League, which is well known for its humanitarian work and support for young musicians from across the Commonwealth. The Queen is the League’s patron.

David, who is a member of the League, and Meryll, who is its vice-chairman, were presented to Prince Michael of Kent. He particularly wanted to learn more about the League and its work in Africa.

It was a glorious, sunny afternoon and the palace grounds were at their best. Sumptuous teas were served from various pavilions dotted around while the band played. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, hosted the event as the Queen was resting following recent eye surgery.
