The Lions Club of Launceston celebrated their 45th Charter Anniversary at Trethorne Golf Club on Sunday, October 20.
They were joined by fellow Lions from Callington, Liskeard, Looe and Torpoint and from as far away as Babbacombe & St Marychurch, Honiton and Axminster. There were also Lions from Newquay, Okehampton, Ivybridge, Tavistock and Plymouth. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for the members who were able to meet up with many friends.
At the Charter Anniversary a special presentation was made to Launceston’s PC Steve Stoppard, the local Neighbourhood PCSO, who was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship.
This is in recognition of his commitment and work within the local community, especially his involvement with the youths of the town. PC Stoppard was absolutely stunned by this recognition.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest award that can be given by Lions Clubs International Foundation.
It is named after Melvin Jones, a businessman from Chicago, who had a vision of people working together to improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves and formed Lions Clubs in 1917.
Today there are Lions Clubs across the world with 1.4-million members who all work to improve the lives of those within their own communities and worldwide.
