I WOULD like to allay Peter Mawer's fears about a wild garlic takeover (the 'Post', May 14). Both bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) and wild garlic (Allium ursinum) are native species (naturally occurring here). They tend to be found in slightly different places, the wild garlic preferring slightly damper, richer, shadier and less acid soils.
I am not familiar with the site he mentioned but I would think that it is unlikely that the bluebells would be eliminated by the wild garlic. If wild garlic were ever a problem, I would prefer it to be harvested for food rather than sprayed.
