A WOMAN from Launceston is taking on a mighty challenge for an even mightier cause.
Nikki Gaynor, who grew up in Launceston and now lives in Darlington, is making a very special journey back to her hometown.
After losing her best friend to suicide, Nikki set herself a mission to walk from Darlington to Launceston to raise money for charity.
Speaking to the Post she said: “I lost my best friend to suicide and we have the highest rate of suicide in the UK in the North East of England. On average, six people a week take their own lives.”
The walk, which is more than 350 miles, is in aid of the If U Care Share Foundation. The charity provides a range of services to help tackle its three main aims: prevention, intervention and supporting those bereaved by suicide.
Despite the magnitude of the challenge, Nikki has said that she hasn’t experienced any difficulty and has been driven by her cause. She explained: “There hasn’t really been the hardest part because I’m carrying the 33 peoples names on my T-shirt who took their lives to suicide, so I’ve never walked alone.”
There have however been plenty of highlights, not only raising awareness but Nikki has also met a variety of people on her journey.
“I have met some absolutely amazing people on the way,” she said. “And the whole journey has been a really good experience getting the awareness out of mental health and suicide prevention.”
So far, Nikki’s challenge has raised nearly £3,000, far exceeding her initial target of £500.
Should everything go to plan, Nikki should have completed her walk on August 23.
