THE latest proposal to convert the former Kerenza Hotel into residential accommodation has been put before Cornwall Council’s planners.
The latest proposals for the future of the disused hotel on Flexbury Avenue in Flexbury would see the former hotel room block converted into five flats.
Among the litany of previous plans had been a bid to convert the same hotel room block into eight flats and other redevelopment proposals.
Explaining the changes, the applicant told Cornwall Council: “The Kerenza Hotel developed originally from a substantial three storey house which had a large more modern extension added to accommodate a large number of its rooms in an adjacent room block.
“Whilst the permission in principle application proposed to either convert the existing building or replace the building in its entirety, it has now been concluded that the most sustainable and sensible approach is to retain the existing building and carry out internal alterations to facilitate the change of use.
“Retaining the existing structure in full also facilitates retaining the existing flat which already has residential use. This means that the total number of new flats will only be five, although there will be six in total once complete.
“Due to this technicality, this application is being submitted as a full application for change of use, rather than a technical details consent application. However, given the permission in principle approval remains extant and is a material consideration, the evaluation of this proposal in planning terms should be the same.
“This proposal is highly sustainable as it fully reuses the existing building and will have very little impact on its surroundings. Additional landscaping will be introduced around the building to soften its appearance and it will be repainted a more neutral colour.”
