COUNCILLORS from Bude-Stratton Town Council’s planning committee have objected to a Bude hotel’s request to change its front bay windows.
The application from Tommy Jacks Beach Hotel at Crooklets sought permission to change the front bay windows, from three sash windows to one single window. This was discussed at the planning committee meeting on November 9.
Cllr Peter La Broy, also Cornwall Councillor for Bude, kicked off discussions swiftly. He said: “I am immediately cautious about this, because all of the dwellings in this area are historic buildings.”
Although Cllr Brian Dixon was under the impression that the changes would not be ‘detrimental’, Cllr Lea Deely said: “It changes the whole character of the buildings. Perhaps it’s more expensive to maintain sash windows and maybe they need replacing.”
Cllr La Broy added: “I have to say, I don’t like it — because it’s such a dramatic change to the building.”
However, Cllr Bob Willingham, committee chairman, was under no impression that the changes to the windows would be harmful to the appearance of the dwelling.
He said: “I don’t mind it. It’s modernisation, it’s moving on, which we have to do, but I’m happy with the planning committee’s decision.”
Cllr Julia Bryson proposed objection to the application, saying: “I think we should object on the basis that it changes the character of the building and the whole run-along, not just that building.”
The committee voted to object to the plans. Cllr Dixon and Willingham voted against the proposal. The final decision is expected to be made by Cornwall Council planning committee.
