A Launceston resident has created a new group that aims to help those struggling with memory problems.

Phillippa Hodge is starting her own Cognitive Stimulation Therapy group, to help those struggling with their memory.

In 2011, Phillippa became interesting in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) while supporting a lady with vascular dementia.

Speaking to the Post, she explained: “I was lucky to see a vacancy in Age UK Cornwall working with people living with dementia and became trained in the key principles; that of mental stimulation, associations, orientation, opinions, choice, involvement and being person centred.

“Cognitive Stimulation Therapy is a unique programme with clear evidence of benefitting cognition and quality of life. It can slow down the progression of dementia in some people but above all it stimulates the brain in a social, fun setting.

“In 2013 I provided CST for three years, under the umbrella of a charity in the Echo Centre in Liskeard, with the privilege of having a having a waiting list. I provided three separate groups and a Rhyme and Rhythm group focusing on poetry and music for those who were struggling a little more with their cognition.”

However, having had to postpone the groups due to her own ill health, Phillippa is now hoping to expand the Memory Matters South West, Memory Service to East Cornwall.

“Currently there is no one covering The Memory Service in East Cornwall which includes Launceston,” she explained. “And my passion to help those with memory difficulties inspired me to set up a CST group with a view to dovetailing services such as the Memory Cafe.

“The group is predominantly for people who are concerned about their memory, those waiting appointments to have an assessment or those who have a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia.”

Sessions will begin on May 15, at The Orchard Centre in Launceston. With Phillippa funding the group herself, it is free to those who attend, but she does asks for a small donation towards costs.
