A YOUNG girl thought to be one of the youngest ever fundraisers, helping to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West before she was even born, has undertaken the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The Post featured Megan Bass and her twin brother, Alfie, when they were born. They are now eight-years-old.
Their mother, Steph, used to own the Post Office in Altarnun, and before the twins arrived she ran a competition for people to guess the weight and sex of the babies.
The twins, Steph and Post Office customers helped to raise £120 for the hospice’s Precious Lives Appeal at the time.
Now, continuing her fundraising ways, Megan has managed to raise £653.80 for Cancer Research UK, by taking on the 5k Race for Life in Truro, on Sunday, July 9.
Steph said: “I think Megan heard about the Race for Life on the radio coming home from school and said she was going to do it. She said she wanted to do it for grandma. We have various close family members — my husband, father-in-law and my mum have all been touched by cancer. People close to her have gone through treatment.
“She nominated me to do the Race for Life with her. How could you refuse!
“She always watches Stand Up For Cancer, Comic Relief — she’s a very caring little girl.”
With the help and support of twin brother Alfie, Megan baked biscuits to sell to friends at school prior to the 5k, with ‘Race for Life’ stamped on the biscuits, and some in the shape of the letter ‘C’.
Steph set Megan up with an online fundraising page where lots of family and friends donated. Megan also collected money at the village fun day the day before the Race for Life.
Steph added: “Getting that medal at the end [of Race for Life] and being part of the whole experience, even for me was quite emotional. It was lovely to see so many people doing their bit.
“We kept each other going. With everybody in front of you and behind you there was that team spirit and lots of people cheering everybody on and clapping.
“Knowing she was going to get this medal to say she had achieved it, when she saw the finish line she just ran!”
Megan completed the 5k in 1 hour and 27 seconds.
