CORONATION Park, in Launceston, has sadly been the victim of vandalism over the last year.

A report from Coronation Park trustees by their chairman Dave Gordon, who is also the town’s deputy mayor, was received at Launceston’s annual parish meeting on April 18.

However, Cllr Gordon said: “[The trust] remain adamant that such unsociable behaviour by a minority will not spoil the park for the majority.”

The park is managed by nine trustees, who said they ‘remain committed to providing a relaxing area for leisure, purposes and a play area for our children’.

Mr Charles Gillbard donated the land back in the 1930s for the leisure purposes of the town.

The trustees continue to invest in the park’s infrastructure, and have purchased another major play item being installed in the next few months. It will replace one of the older units the trustees say is becoming unsafe for children to use.

They also reported there have been litter problems recently within the park and they are ‘working hard to find a long-term solution by securing a reliable service provider for the future’.

The flowerbeds will be brought back to life by a new planting programme over the coming year, and trustees have agreed a request by Launceston Lions Club to install a bench and flowerbeds near the main drive.

There are also plans to install a suitable bench in Cllr Anthony (Tony) Sandercock’s name. A trustee, Cllr Sandercock passed away last year. His fellow trustees said: “Tony was a hard working, active and passionate trustee of Coronation Park.”
