LAUNCESTON was out in force this week to pay their respects to the country’s current and former service personnel as part of VE Day 80.

On May 8, residents came together in the town square to mark the 80th anniversary since the official acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces.

In attendance were members of the town’s Royal British Legion, members of the press and public, as well as the town’s mayor and deputy mayor.

During the event, the town crier, Rob Tremain gave a moving speech, asking to ‘let us remember’ all those who have sacrificed something to maintain the world we live in today.

In the evening, a beacon lighting was held at the Windmill Band Stand.
