LAUNCESTON Library had an overwhelming turnout to their moon landing celebration on Saturday, July 20. Children got the opportunity to design their own space rockets as well as astronauts with the help of the DS Smith Community team, Becky and Sam, who supplied all the craft materials and creative inspiration for the day.

In the morning the children were joined by children’s illustrator, Robert Crowther, who is best known for his pop-up creations and helped the children bring their thoughts to life within their own designs.

The library explained how the moon landing was also a central theme to their reading challenge ‘Space Chase’, and that DS Smith were determined to create a spaceship in the downstairs room and rockets in the library for children to enjoy over the summer holidays. Andi Snook said how the library was able to offer free family events right through the holidays with the support of community partners and the local town council, which would make a big difference to many looking for ways to keep their children occupied and entertained. The space craft event was one of the first big combined events since Launceston Town Council took over the running of the library, and families have many more events to look forward to.

A spokesperson from the library said: “Thank you to everyone for their support, including children’s book illustrator Robert Crowther who spent the morning in the library helping children think about what they wanted to draw and how to put their ideas down on paper for the Spaceport Mascot competition.”
