A NUMBER of £30 fixed penalty notices have been handed out to drivers in Launceston who flouted bans by entering three of the town's narrow streets.
In a follow-up to the education exercise carried out by Launceston Police Neighbourhood Officers earlier this month, the Neighbourhood Team (pictured) on September 23, carried out a prosecution exercise with regards to the misuse of drivers using Church Street, High Street and Westgate Street.
Vehicles using High Street and Church Street were stopped and the drivers spoken to by officers in a two-and-a-half-hour exercise and a number of £30 fixed penalty notices were issued.
PCSO Steve Edser from Launceston Police said: "It is apparent that it will take some time to educate drivers, who are predominantly Launceston residents, that these roads are not to be used as a cut through.
"Entry to these roads is prohibited to motor vehicles except for loading and unloading purposes and the items that are being loaded or unloaded need to be of a significant bulk, weight or quantity that carrying it a distance is not possible.
"It must also be pointed out that using these roads to pick up or drop off passengers does not constitute loading or unloading."
PCSO Edser added: "It is the intention of the Launceston Neighbourhood Team to repeat this exercise on a periodic basis until the message gets across.
"As a result of the concerns raised by the public this has been made a Launceston PACT (Partner and Communities Together) priority and will continued to be looked at until matters improve."
