LAUNCESTON  Town Councillors have voiced their surprise that the £8,400 cost of four benches and other "street furniture" for the enhancement project in the town Square was not covered by the £220,000 funding. The backless granite and oak benches will cost £1,140 each with the total bill being made up of bollards (£1,500), planters (£1,000), bin (£1,000) and electricity supply (£500). Councillors, meeting on January 15, were told by the town clerk, Mrs Rita Skinner that the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) officer, Lorna Lane, had indicated she could not order the benches on behalf of the THI and nor could North Cornwall District Council (NCDC). The council, said Ms Lane, had agreed to funding the street furniture element of the project if the funding element failed. The council had agreed it would have responsibility for the Square and it should order the benches, she added.
