A NEW steel footbridge for Launceston's St Joseph's School was lowered into position last week.
The bridge, believed to be the first footbridge across the river since medieval times, will connect the existing school site to the newly created sports field across the River Kensey.
It adds to the two existing bridges close by being, the listed iron mill leat bridge across the Launceston Steam Railway and the brick-built railway bridge carrying the track across the river.
The new access will allow the schoolchildren to access the playing surface and the riverbank and proposed outdoor school area. It will also facilitate the creation of a new wildlife habitat over time.
