A FRACTION of an inch infringement over a parking bay line earned a holiday-making couple a £100 penalty ticket and has brought fresh calls to rein in 'out-of-control' operators. The demand was placed on the windscreen of Herbert and Agathe Hautmann's hire car as they enjoyed the sunshine in Port Isaac. The couple had properly paid and displayed but one wheel of the car had strayed onto the line separating the parking bays. Mrs Hautmann said: "We just couldn't believe it or understand why we were being asked to pay such a large amount of money." The couple had been holidaying in Cornwall from their home in Regensburg, Germany. Because they feared unexplained extra charges if they paid by credit card, the Hautmann's felt obliged to pay £60 immediately, using a British postal order, to avoid the full £100 demanded. Ironically, the incident coincided with a massive publicity campaign being launched in Germany to attract more visitors to Cornwall.
